Service Description:
Materials engineers work with metals, ceramic, plastics, composites, natural materials and fibers, and even diamonds and other precious gems. They study the properties of different materials and develop new materials that are stronger, lighter or both.
A materials engineer must have an understanding of engineering and materials science. A materials engineer is often called upon to perform chemical research. He or she must be aware of current trends in the technological field. The material engineer must also be aware of new development of processing techniques, as well as problems related to processing and products.
The first step to entering a career as a materials engineer is obtaining an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in engineering or materials science. While a bachelor’s degree is preferred, it is not essential for many entry level positions. A master’s degree may be useful, but a candidate needs only a bachelor’s degree if they have over five years of relevant work experience. Many engineers begin with an internship before finding full-time employment at a company where they can work their way up the food chain.
A materials engineer designs, develops and tests materials and products that people use every day. They must have a strong background in science. Materials engineer exists and is an important part of our society—to ensure that we have the necessary materials for daily living.
